What Is the Difference Between 2D and 3D Animation?

A lot of people do not even realize that there is a difference between 2D and 3D animation. They just assume that animation is animation. They think of animation as the art of bringing characters to life and while it is true that is part of the story it is not the whole story. You use each to get a different effect. Today most of the animation is done in 3D for movies, cartoons and even in advertising but you still run across plenty of examples of 2D animation used in different areas.

Comparing the Two

2D animation is an older form than 3D animation as a matter of fact it is the original animation that has been around since the late 1800’s. 3D animation is a bit newer (actually a lot newer). 2D animation goes frame by frame, initially all of it was drawn by hand, and each frame was painstakingly drawn. Today both 2D animation and 3D animation is done on a computer.

Think of 2D as:

  • Mickey Mouse
  • Donald Duck
  • All the older Disney cartoon characters

Now think of 3D as:

  • Jurassic park dinosaurs
  • Transformers
  • Action hero movies

The 2D animation is flat, and the 3D animation is much more life-like. Both are useful in their own right but today most companies expect 3D results unless they are looking for a retro look. There are amazing things that you can do with both 2D and 3D thanks to computer software and the right skills.
