Tom and Jerry is a famous American animated series, which is famous all around the world. It is one of those series which has a cult following, both among the kids and the elder generation. Everyone has watched this famous series. It was created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Between 1940-1958, the show ran for the MGM studio. During this time, it won seven academy awards. Tom and Jerry has been one of the most successful animation series till date.
The story of this series revolves around the two main protagonists which is a mouse (Jerry) and a cat (Tom). They are at the loggerheads with each other all the time. They fight and try to outdo each other at every possible situation. Tom is always unsuccessful in catching Jerry, as the latter is too clever for him. In some of the episodes, the caring aspect of both are shown, where they become friends for a very brief period. The music plays a very important role in this animated series, as there is almost no conversation shown between the two of them. John Carr was the animator who named both Tom and Jerry. The animation of Tom and Jerry was of very high quality.
The show had its own share of controversies too. It was criticised for using too much violence, although blood was never shown on the screen. Racial stereotypes were evident in almost every blast scene, when the faces of the animals or people became dark and lips swollen. It was also thought that the series encouraged the children to smoke, as the manner in which the characters smoked looked stylish or glamoured.
Tom`s appearance changed considerably over the years. Earlier, it had shaggy fur with wrinkles all over the face. But, Jerry`s remained almost the same. After the advent of Television, theatrical revenue dropped. In 1975, Hanna-Barbera decided to make both Tom and Jerry friends as they were told to avoid using violence on the screen, as it might have a bad effect on younger children. Racial overtone was also discouraged. In 1986, the Tom and Jerry show became the property of the Turner Entertainment. Tom and Jerry had many spin offs in the form of new episodes. But, ultimately the original show was a bigger hit.
